Crochet Pattern | December Toque

girl modeling a handmade rust red ribbed fisherman's toque

Introducing the December Toque. This is the perfect simple modern knit-like ribbed hat. Because it uses bulky yarn, it is a fairly quick make for yourself or as a gift for someone you love. Because of the knit-like texture, this hat does not contain any gaps or holes, so it will keep you quite warm when venturing outdoors in the cold fall or winter months.

The Design

This hat/beanie is a toque-style (brimless) fisherman's hat, that features a knit-like ribbed texture. It is worked in one "rectangular" piece that incorporates short rows for shaping along the way. If short rows intimidate you, don't worry...they are quite simple in this pattern, and reference photos are included to help you along the way.

Fit + Sizing

The December Toque fit is neither tall and slouchy nor short and fitted — it's the perfect mid-length. However, it is quite easy to transform the fit/style into a fitted cap, fold-over, or longer fit using the suggestions in the pattern.

It is designed to fit the head of an average adult female with head circumference between approximately 21-23". Due to the ribbed design, the hat is quite stretchy width-wise, so it can stretch to fit most female heads.

Other materials you'll need:

  • optional 5mm hook for ease of cinching and seaming top of hat together

  • tapestry needle

  • scissors

Yarn Substitutions:

Hue and Me is labeled as a category 5 bulky weight yarn. There are a small number of substitutions for this particular weight category (most of which I found at WeCrochet), but since Hue and Me is so popular, I assume most makers will prefer to use it. If substituting, however, I highly recommend making sure you make a gauge swatch. Small differences in gauge can lead to big differences in project outcome. For more on gauge, you can read this blog.

  • Lion Brand Woolspun | This is currently not available, but if you happen to have any skeins of this on hand, it's quite a comparable substitute to Hue and Me (aside from the ply).

  • WeCrochet Biggo | This is a 2-ply 50% superwash merino wool and 50% nylon blend bulky yarn.

  • WeCrochet Brava Bulky | This is an economy acrylic yarn that would be a really cost efficient substitute. It's only $3.49 per skein! I had some of this on hand here at home and was able to meet gauge beautifully with this even though it's just a tad thinner.

  • WeCrochet Wool of the Andes Bulky | This is a 100% Peruvian Highland Wool that creates really great heirloom projects! I've used the worsted and sport varieties of this yarn before, and it's really lovely to work with, and softens over time.
