The Design—Oversized, Ribbed Crochet Cardigan Pattern
This knit-like oversized chunky crochet cardigan is a classic wardrobe layering staple. The crochet stitches combine to create a faux 1x2 knit-like ribbing texture. It features mirrored short row shaping along the front opening and underneath the arms for a truly refined look. Other features include a relaxed dropped sleeve and faux 1x1 knit-like edging to finish off this design.
The cardigan is constructed side-to-side by making three panels—a front left, front right, and back panel, then seaming them together at the shoulders and sides. Then, the front ribbing is added using the perpendicular method. And finally, the sleeves are added to the armholes using the perpendicular method.
Fit + Sizing
The Cavalcade Cardigan has an oversized fit, with mirrored short row shaping along the front opening, slightly tapered sleeves (also using mirrored short row shaping), and a 1x1 knit-like ribbing along the bottom, front, and cuffs. Sizing is based on Craft Yarn Council's standards.
It is designed to have a positive ease of 9-13". To select your size, measure your bust and find the garment circumference in the chart that matches approximately 9-13" larger. If you prefer to have more or less ease, select the garment circumference that reflects that number in inches compared to your measured bust in inches.
Size | Bust Circum. | Garment Circum. |
XS | 28-30" | 41" |
S | 32-34" | 44" |
M | 36-38" | 47" |
L | 40-42" | 52.5" |
XL | 44-46" | 55.5" |
2XL | 48-50" | 61.5" |
3XL | 52-54" | 64" |

Other materials you'll need:

Yarn Substitutions
The yarn I used is Lion Brand Color Theory. Many DK/light worsted yarns could work for this pattern. You may also opt for a light bulky weight yarn, held single (I used WeCrochet Brava Bulky for my second sample). You can also check out Yarn Sub. I recommend making sure you make a gauge swatch. Small differences in gauge can lead to big differences in project outcome. For more on gauge, you can read this blog.
